"The ZACA Fire"
Wildfire
in Los Padres National Forest
Ojai, California
August 19, 2007
This wildland fire has been burning since early July and has charred
over 230,000 acres.
Officials estimate achieving full containment by September 7th.
These flames might look small, but keep in mind,
they're about three miles away!
The US Forest Service's newly acquired Cobra
helicopter, modified to function as an aerial observation platform.
USFS "55" air tanker banks through the smoke for another drop...
Air Attack uses smoke to mark where the SEAT (Single
Engine Air Tanker),
following close behind, will make it's next drop of fire retardant.
This modified DC10 skims the treetops making a
nearly two mile long drop of fire retardant ahead of the fire.
The air show was spectacular! This team made
several passes right over our heads!
If you look closely, you can actually see the pilot
opening the tank doors for the drop!
"Do you know the way to the car wash?"
A dramatic sunset at the Zaca fire, thanks in part
to the smoke and haze...
